OROVILLE, Calif. (July 3, 2024) - A fast-moving wildfire in Northern California has burned 3,500 acres and forced the evacuation of more than 28,000 people in Butte County.

The Thompson Fire is zero percent contained as of Wednesday morning, according to CalFire. Flames have engulfed several homes and vehicles, and the fire is threatening even more structures.

Oroville is no stranger to devastating fires. In 2021, the Dixie Fire destroyed more than 1,000 homes and killed one person in the county.

Officials are urging residents to evacuate immediately if they are in the path of the fire. Evacuation centers have been set up at several locations in Butte County.

The cause of the Thompson Fire is under investigation.
